La vie en Pentaho

December 15, 2010

As I write this blog I am on my way back home after a day in Paris where we participated in our first industry event in France last week.

Much of the past week has been French flavoured with the announcement of Pentaho in France, including several interviews with journalists, publications writing about and picking up on our announcement and last but  certainly not least, the launch of our brand-new website in French. It was about time that we truly had a local presence in France!

To emphasise our intentions, we participated in the Forum Decideo 2010, an annual event held in Paris which brings together BI experts, users, vendors for a series of case study presentations and expert sessions. We attended the event with our new French partner Valuetis, who also sponsored the event. It was a great experience to meet and speak with so many of our French friends.

Speaking of partners, we also held a webinar, Delivering low risk, low cost business intelligence solutions, last week with a new UK partner called Voodoo, who bring years of BI experience to bear and are fully focused on Pentaho. If you missed today’s webinar, feel free to view the replay here.

It’s really ‘La vie en Pentaho‘ these days and a great way to move through the last month of 2010.

Many of you are probably busy finishing up some activities before the holiday seasons, so I wish you all ‘bon courage’.

Cheers,

Seen and Heard in EMEA

October 25, 2010

It is always good to get out and meet old friends and new, when the sales calendar permits. A great way to combine meeting the public and keeping up Pentaho’s increasing momentum in the EMEA region is attending events. This month has seen seven so far; the launch of our EMEA HQ in Sweden, the Ovum Business Intelligence summit in London, our sponsorship of the Hadoop User Group, also in London, as well as dates for the Pentaho Agile BI Tour, which is ongoing for another few months

First and foremost was the launch of our EMEA HQ in a city which has seen its fair share of Open Source innovation – Stockholm. Held in the famous 100 year old Dramaten theatre and co-hosted by Pentaho partner Omicron, an invited audience of around 50 heard from Lars Nordwall, our Swedish-born Senior Vice-President of Sales (pictured left), as well as partners Conduct and BizIntel. A great success  in terms of networking, we will follow up with another event towards the end of the year also at the Dramaten, so feel free to let me know if you can make it. You can see all the photos from this event on the Pentaho Facebook Page.

Next up was the high-end Ovum Business Intelligence Symposium, a CIO-level event, which we co-sponsored with our partner Millersoft and saw us introduce a very impressive presentation from Pentaho customer Air Menzies, whose business involves shipping air freight underneath the passengers on scheduled flights. The audience were spellbound with tales of gold-plated Bugatti Veyronnes being transported from the Gulf to London for a summer with their owners and perhaps even more by an excellent iPad demo of Pentaho from satisfied customer Angus Gow (look out for the impressive case study soon).

Finally in a busy few weeks, Pentaho contributed the beer, pizza and (some of the) brainpower to only the fifth UK Hadoop User Group. Pentaho’s philosophy, which fosters communities like this, proves the importance of the Community aspect of our Open Source commitment. In this communal atmosphere, it was pleasing to hear so many searching questions from a friendly gathering that included some forward-thinking Pentaho customers. If you deal with Big Data but could not make it along, the chances are our paths will cross soon.

A lot of listening

I am writing this blog as I fly home to Sweden from this year’s Pentaho EMEA Partner Summit in Lisbon, Portugal. This was a great opportunity to meet many of our partners from all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The event was an amazing success based off our partners’ feedback such as:

“It was beneficial to meet in-person with the Pentaho Channels and Management teams.”
“I found strong value in networking with other partners and learning about their accomplishments and best practices”
“Good presenters, good networking, good socializing, GREAT event!”

Personally, I found a lot of value in listening! As much as we presented over the two days, the team also did a lot of listening to our partners to better understand their challenges and opportunities. After their hearing stories, suggestions and ideas, I am very optimistic that we can now even better align with our partners’ needs to help drive more joint business and success.

One of the highlights of the Summit was presenting the 2010 EMEA Partner Awards. These awards recognise the organisations that have worked closely with Pentaho throughout the year to deliver outstanding customer success, commercial results or innovation in the region

Congratulations to the 2010 EMEA Partner Award Winners:

  • EMEA Partner of the Year – BNOVA in Italy was recognised for driving the most revenue for a partner in EMEA.
  • Best Market Development in EMEA – Millersoft in the UK was recognised for being the fastest to sell, market and grow after joining the Pentaho partner program.
  • Best Community Contributor EMEA – Aschauer in Austria was recognised for creating a SAP Java connector plugin for the data integration components of Pentaho Data Integration 4.0.
  • Channel Managers Pick EMEA – Xpand IT in Portugal was recognised as being Best in Class in terms of following the Partner Processes.
  • SI of the Year EMEA – Microgenesis in Spain was recognised for major wins at two global telecommunications providers.
  • Training Partner of the Year EMEA – Linalis in Switzerland & France was recognised for driving the most training revenue in EMEA.
  • OEM BI partner of the year – Conduct in Norway was recognised for their win at TV2, Norway’s largest commercial TV Channel.

Above are some photos from the event of our 2010 EMEA Partner Award winners. If you missed this great event and are interested in attending something similar in the future, we have recently announced the Global Partner Summit in San Francisco, November 9-10. After seeing and hearing the value the attendees took away from the EMEA Partner Summit, I highly recommend you check it out.

Cheers and have a successful end of September,

Pentaho hires heavy hitter to head Europe

May 4, 2010

This week kicks off our EMEA Agile BI Roadshow. If you are in Turkey, Milan or Madrid make sure to drop by and meet Vinay Joosery, our new VP of Sales for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Asia) region. The growth in EMEA is blazing, creating a wealth of sales opportunities and we are stepping up our game accordingly. Vinay brings the skill set that will propel our European operations forward at this critical time and build a sales operation that can take on and take down the incumbents across the region. After seven years at MySQL (Oracle/Sun) I asked Vinay, “What brought you to Pentaho?” Välkomna Vinay!

Guest blogger Vinay Joosery

The new guy often sees things differently to the ‘lifers’. I thought, after seven years in sales at the pioneering MySQL, it might take a while to settle in. At Pentaho though, life moves fast and there is a strong sense of community, so heading into my second month here, it already feels like I have been here for a while.

One reason for that, is the similarity in approach between the two companies. Pentaho is pioneering the commercialization of the leading end-to-end open source BI platform, at the very time that many organizations are looking for just such a solution. For me, there was no better professional challenge.

In my interactions with Pentaho customers, I see a wide range of adoption. We have the small fast-moving organizations who need to stay ahead of the curve and aggressively grow their top-line, like Aspiro, the ‘Nordic iTunes’. Or, the larger more conservative shops, who, perhaps driven by more austere economic times, need to reduce bottom-line costs. One good example is Swissport, a billion euro enterprise who employs over 30,000 people. It is great to see first-hand the real business value that customers are taking today from our offerings.

One important factor for these companies was the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’, easily gather independent information about the product and get assistance when they needed it.  Businesses are looking to ‘de-risk’ their investments, and this is where the deal is irresistible. In my previous roles dealing with high-end proprietary software, this is not possible. With Open Source it is common practice – one can follow the development of the products, access the public bug database, contribute and help influence the product roadmap.

What I love most about Pentaho is the great product, already in use by thousands of organizations, the engineers who are passionate about the product and so a large and active community, which keeps us all honest. In EMEA, we are very focused on ramping up on the marketing and sales.

It will take all of my experience of living on three continents and test my three European language skills, but I am relishing this new challenge. Thanks for welcoming me onboard with such warmth and feel free to reach out. I will do my utmost to deliver for all of you.

Cheers,
Vinay Joosery
