Why I’m travelling 7,000km for PentahoWorld

I’ve watched PentahoWorld unfold over the last few months, and I see it as a must-attend for companies and professionals who have adopted Pentaho platform. Our impression is that this is a well-organized, truly global event, with users, partners, and experts from several countries, so it will be a great business opportunity to accelerate our knowledge about Pentaho, network with other users, and better understand important use cases.

From a knowledge gathering perspective, it’s a fantastic shortcut to improving our knowledge about the product, attend training sessions, understand the roadmap, and stay on top of business analytics industry trends. It will help us understand where we should be going in the middle-to-long term with Pentaho and inform our business analytics strategy overall. Its a great opportunity that we haven’t seen before in Latin America – so the trip from Brazil was a quick and logical decision for us.

Networking is also extremely important to us. We want to share our experiences with other customers, partners and sponsors. The opportunity to meet with the Pentaho team and build relationships across a cross functional group of people (Sales, Engineering, Marketing) will help our Pentaho relationship for years to come.

And of course, the sessions. I’m personally most keen to see the product test drive sessions on Wednesday focused on Big Data (NoSQL & Hadoop) and the regular sessions on Thursday and Friday covering business/advanced analytics and big data. Last but not least, my team and I look forward to the Pentaho Excellence Awards ceremony during the Friday keynote where SPOTPROMO will receive an award for the ROI category.

(Pentaho note: Need help building your business case for attending PentahoWorld? Check out the blog post from our COO that tells you how to do just that.)

Hope to see you there!

How to Convince Your Boss to Send You to PentahoWorld

September 9, 2014

I’m sure you know that three days of immersive learning and hands-on training will improve your effectiveness with the Pentaho Business Analytics Platform – the question is, how do you make the case to your boss and get buy-in from your company to attend PentahoWorld?

In my role as COO at Pentaho, I’m often asked to approve the expense of attending a conference. So, I thought I’d give some insight into what I would look for in a compelling business case to justify the expense – one that I would happily approve.

  1. Sell the outcome, not the cost.  Pentaho can reduce the time to design, develop and deploy big data analytics projects 15x faster than other methods. How much is your organization investing in big data integration or analytics projects, and how much would it save (or what else could you accomplish) if you could speed that deployment up by 15x?
  2. Future-proof your organization. Pentaho’s ability to connect to all data sources, then blend and analyze that data is a killer advantage, but do you know how to take full advantage? Come to PentahoWorld to learn from Pentaho product and solution experts, fellow customers and partners. Ensure your company can scale and grow into 2015.
  3. Optimize your data investment.  Pentaho can help you make the most of the data investments your company has made to date.  Attendance at PentahoWorld will ensure you learn best practices to effectively access, blend and analyze that data, and deliver it to the right people for decision-making. Come to PentahoWorld for practical advice on how to dramatically improve your data ROI.
  4. Sheer information density.  You won’t find another opportunity to interact with as many Pentaho product experts, customers, and industry leaders doing innovative things with big data, embedded and business analytics and data integration.  Our agenda is packed with rich information and hands-on training to accelerate every aspect of your data and analytics projects.  Content covers everything from best practices to our strategic vision and product roadmaps.
  5. Cost-effective location. Simply put, Orlando is a less expensive location than many other cities where technology conferences take place, especially once you factor in the discounted hotel rates we’ve secured for PentahoWorld (expires Sept 22).  If you’re going to make a cost-effective investment in your data and analytics capabilities, this is the one to pick.

Once you have these five points covered, make sure to take a close look at our session agenda.  You’ll find many sessions that likely align with strategic initiatives your company is currently working on or planning to in the near future. I suggest mapping out which sessions you plan to attend and what company initiatives you expect to impact by attending the Conference. When you have a conversation with your boss about attending PentahoWorld, you’ll be able to paint a complete picture of how this will help the company.

Good luck, and hope to see you in Orlando!

The Netflix of Medicine

September 5, 2014

silverchairMuch like how Netflix and Amazon offer their customers ‘preferential content,’ Silverchair Information Systems is now able to provide richer and more valuable contextual data in advertising feeds to create personalized content recommendations based on a reader’s history. Working with the STM publishing industry (customers include the American Medical Association, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and McGraw-Hill Education), Silverchair has propelled user content to enable greater reach, impact, and utility through integrated and personalized solutions.

silverchair logoSilverchair is embedding Pentaho Business Analytics to redefine how the scholarly publishing industry leverages the value of its content and provides novel insights about usage to publishers and editors in the Scientific, Technical and Medical (STM) space, based on this data. By transforming its data warehouse and ETL processes with Pentaho, Silverchair is empowering scientists, engineers and doctors to make better-informed decisions.

How did Silverchair become the Netflix of STM? Forrest Swope, Senior Director, Platform Development, Silverchair explains, “Before embedding Pentaho, our analytics processing time was too slow and cumbersome to deliver our customers the real-time analytical insights to support editorial decision-making and Sales support they need. In just a few months, we were up and running with redesigned usage processing and immediately realized the benefits around reduced data processing time and minimized IT burden.”

Silverchair will discuss this use-case and best practices in a panel titled “Embedded Analytics Best Practices: Extending and Integrating Pentaho with Minimal Coding” at PentahoWorld, the inaugural user conference designed for IT professionals, BI and data integration developers, data architects, analysts and business users on October 8-10, 2014 at Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida.

The Pentaho Test Drive

September 2, 2014

Before making an investment in a new car, you may first narrow down what features you want such as fast, easy to use and cost effective. Next, once you have a strategy you probably head to the dealer to test drive a few of the targeted options before making a big investment in a car that you know will improve your commute.

With the rapidly changing data landscape, there are newer, faster, and easier to use options to access, analyze and predict your data that are now in the marketplace. Similar to the flashy car advertisements, its hard to separate hype from reality of which tools will give your organization the performance and flexibility needed to achieve a return on your investment.

Similar to the process you would take to buy a new car, at PentahoWorld, we are giving you a unique opportunity to test drive three different innovative use cases that we see making a huge impact on our customers. Test drive options include: Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) with Hadoop, PDI with MongoDB, and PDI with Weka (Predictive) – see below for descriptions.

At the PentahoWorld Hands-On Product Training, we hand over the keys or in reality – we provide the experts, computers and lunch. This really is a great opportunity to take your knowledge to the next level with in-depth instructions with these innovative technologies. I recommend signing up for the test drive sessions ASAP as space is limited, and the early bird pricing ends September 5th.

Test Drive Pentaho with Hadoop

This Test Drive covers the steps to use Hadoop in the process of optimizing your data warehouse. You’ll gain hands-on experience with creating folders in HDFS, loading data, working with PDI transformations, configuring Pentaho Map Reduce and reviewing your results in HDFS. You’ll orchestrate it all by using a Hadoop job in PDI.

Test Drive Pentaho with MongoDB

This Test Drive outlines a real world scenario based on creating a 360° view of your customers. You’ll gain hands-on experience with connecting MongoDB to PDI, loading data into a MongoDB document, creating arrays, creating an aggregate pipeline query, and visualizing the results. You’ll orchestrate all of these tasks using a MongoDB job in PDI.

Test Drive Pentaho with Weka

This Test Drive introduces basic data mining concepts and terminology, along with the parts of the Pentaho suite that facilitate the development and application of predictive modelling. If you are new to data mining or you are considering a predictive solution for your business challenge, this is the test drive for you. You’ll gain hands-on experience with the Pentaho tools using real world direct-marketing use case. In particular, you will be introduced to some common types of data mining models and guided through the process of creating, evaluating, exporting and deploying a predictive model.
