Attention channel partners: turn big data into big money!

October 8, 2012

In Europe, where about half our sales come through the channel, I’m seeing some interesting opportunities for our partners to profit from the big data revolution that I wanted to share. The good news is that the customer demand is already here.

One is in providing expert professional services to help customers plan and implement big data solutions. Within this area, one of the biggest opportunities is in tool selection. There’s a dizzying array of big data technology on the market, much of which is unfamiliar to customers. For example, there are at least ten NoSQL databases, so which one should they pick? And how should they further complete their big data architecture? Customers are looking for some hands-on guidance.

Another opportunity I am seeing is within partners that are embedding our analytics software to provide big data solutions ‘as-a-service’. These partners offer to pull data from Twitter feeds, Facebook feeds and other sources, perform the advanced analytics on that data and finally serve up that data as a service to their clients. We are seeing a number of marketing software providers that offer these types of services to companies on a subscription basis

You can read more about my observations on how customers are benefitting from big data here in this recent article in the UK channel magazine Microscope.

What will help improve your chances of success?

First, don’t try to boil the ocean! Focus on the needs of a specific industry. Big data uses cases differ massively even between retail banks and wholesales banks, so channel organisations really need to focus on tailored solutions to gain credibility.

Next, avoid the ‘big bang’ approach. Get customers warmed up with big data by proving the value of big data through small pilot projects using a couple of data sources that return specific and measurable outcomes. After the first stage is completed, identify new opportunities and goals and plan the next incremental stage. This allows the customer to become acquainted with the new technologies and processes along the way without being overwhelmed. Customers today want to see results quickly and have little appetite for long term development projects.

Our full Business Analytics platform is the ideal tool for this big data ‘warm up’ process. First you can tackle the data integration challenges using our Pentaho Data Integration (PDI) software. PDI makes big data technologies much easier to use.  Its visual design tool significantly lowers the barriers to getting started with big data by cutting out the complex scripting and coding tasks.

From there you can immediately visualise the results with our underlying analytics engine. That way you can iteratively work your way to a solution that will prove valuable to the customer immediately. If you want to learn more about our big data solutions go to pentahobigdata.com

I hope this has convinced you that the big data revolution stands to offer you some real revenue opportunities today. If you’re an IT channel organisation and would like to know more or you’re a partner with a story to tell, please get in touch!

Pentaho Joins Dell Partner Program for Big Data

June 13, 2012

The opportunity that big data analytics provides for organizations to innovate quickly, predict events and improve customer relationships is endless. Our own customers including Shareable Ink, Travian Games and TravelTainment are using big data analytics today to analyze clinical data, innovate computer games and design targeted promotional campaigns – just to name a few.

Two key themes in of our vision for the future of analytics are to integrate with the leading technology partners in the big data analytics ecosystem and to enable cloud-ready applications.  In light of this, I am incredibly pleased to announce that today Pentaho is part of Dell’s Emerging Solutions Ecosystem, a new partnership program announced last April with the aim of focusing on cloud and big data enablement.

Pentaho’s big data analytics software will be offered with the Dell Apache Hadoop Solution, which brings together Cloudera’s distribution of Apache Hadoop, Dell’s hardware reference architecture and Dell’s Crowbar software, which automates and accelerates the deployment, configuration and ongoing operation of your cloud or cluster environment. The combined solution will also be offered with joint services and support.

What does this mean? I’ve had many conversations this year with customers who’ve told us they need to ‘operationalize’ Hadoop and that’s exactly what this partnership is about.  In a nutshell, this partnership makes it faster and easier for organizations to gain total insight from all their data through a single appliance that combines Hadoop integration, data integration and out-of-the-box analytics.

Why did Dell select Pentaho to be part of the Dell Apache Hadoop Solution? A major factor is that we were one of the first movers in the space announcing support for Big Data in May 2010 and we have many customers doing real work with big data.  We’ve also been working with Cloudera since October 2010 and have a longstanding strategic relationship with them, which includes technology integration.

The partnership means that Dell’s dedicated, big data sales team will now be reselling Pentaho directly into existing and new Dell accounts, initially in North America and other parts of the world very soon.  The Dell partnership also further commercializes Pentaho’s relationship with Cloudera by providing a vehicle to bring a big data offering to the market.

We look forward to helping you achieve your business goals through this important new partnership. For more information about Pentaho and Dell’s Emerging Solutions Ecosystem please visit pentaho.com/big-data/dell/.

Powered by Pentaho 101

March 14, 2012

This week we announced a new program for ISV and SaaS providers called “Powered by Pentaho.” I received several questions from clients and press so I thought I would share them with you to help explain the details behind this great new offer.

What is Powered by Pentaho?

Powered by Pentaho enables Pentaho OEM partners to deliver market-leading analytics capabilities in as little as eight weeks. The new OEM program is a response to the rapid rise in Pentaho’s 2011 OEM sales bookings, which grew more than 130 percent over the same period in 2010.

What does this 8-week program entail?

Pentaho provides the training, support and integration recommendations that best fit your solution objectives. You do the development and quality assurance. Keep in mind that all throughout your development cycle and thereafter, you have access to Pentaho experts who are intimately familiar with the Pentaho architecture and APIs. The best way to picture this is to think of Pentaho’s engineering team as an extension of your own engineering team. We want you to become successful, go to market fast, and build market leadership using our business analytics.

What about Pentaho makes this possible in eight week?

Pentaho technology - We provide embedding options that require little to no development. All you need is basic HTML skills to change the look and feel of our product to match your style and branding. We refer to these options as ‘Bundled’ or ‘Mashup.’ Pentaho offers more in-depth integration level, for OEM partners that require extensions and customization. We often see our OEM partners start with a re-branding and single sign-on approach and later move to a deeper integration.

Pentaho support and training - Pentaho has built services specific to every phase of an OEM’s software development lifecycle. You can not only go to market faster, but also build your future releases, changes and modifications much easier. These services include:

  • Architecture Workshop – Learn the best practices and best integration strategies for your development approach;
  • Tailored Training – Get your engineers and support staff a solid foundation for developing and troubleshooting your solution;
  • Development Support – Get your engineering staff access to Pentaho Java developers with in-depth knowledge of Pentaho architecture to get you to market faster.

Am I the right candidate?

This program is ideal for companies with information-centric software or packaged applications that want to go to market faster with attractive and sophisticated business intelligence and data visualization capabilities. All our customers who have successfully done this in eight weeks or less have a set of common characteristics. They typically have:

  • A phased approach, usually starting with a Bundled / Mashup type embedding option;
  • Data sources that have been prepared, cleansed, and put into a business analytics / reporting format. Pentaho has tools to help you do that;
  • At least one developer – with HTML and some Java skills – staffed – who has taken part in our training and architecture workshop classes.

Does Pentaho have proof points?

To date, hundreds of ISVs and SaaS providers have become Pentaho OEM partners. Marketo is a great example. Marketo was looking for both a modern, flexible technology and a true partner to help them build a brand new business analytics product. With Pentaho they were able to go to market in just eight weeks, delivering a feature-rich product that became a new source of revenue.

We have several great resources such as white papers, webinars, OEM Partner success stories and more. Visit pentaho.com/explore/embedded-bi/ for more information.

Spotlight this week: LexisNexis, Infobright, OpenBI

June 17, 2011

We’ve been heads down the past month preparing for our next MAJOR product launch coming soon (sign-up to be the first to see the impressive new features). In the meantime, we’ve had three partners in the spotlight this past week with exciting new launches and customer success stories that are worth highlighting.

LexisNexis launched their High Performance Computer Cluster (HPCC) technology, making it possible to access and analyze complex, massive data sets in a matter of seconds. They plan to release the internally developed supercomputing platform, HPCC Systems, under a dual license, open source model.

Pentaho is proud to be a founding BI partner in this new exciting open source product making it possible for companies to process and analyze complex, massive data sets in a matter of seconds.

Learn more about HPCC Systems.

Infobright announced Infobright 4.0, the industry’s first database with built-in intelligence for near-real time analysis of machine-generated data. Quoted in the press release is our own CEO, Richard Daley:

“Infobright’s DomainExpert technology delivers new capabilities that allow Pentaho’s data discovery users to analyze their data much more quickly,” said Richard Daley, founder and CEO of Pentaho. “Since our technology is already tightly integrated with Infobright, these new capabilities will be available immediately for customers to generate data analytics faster, easier and more affordably.”

To learn more, read their press release and register for their webinar featuring Infobright 4.0 on June 22nd.

OpenBI published a great case study: Case Commons™, incubated and funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. This is a great story of how Pentaho Partner, OpenBI, and Case Commons™ join forces to provide cutting-edge analytics for human services agencies.

Here’s an insert from the results section of the case study. To read the full case study, click here.

Results
Using the Pentaho BI Suite with Pentaho Data Integration as the data transformation engine, OpenBI built the Casebook Analytics proof of concept featuring an analytical data mart and a front-end dashboard application, including advanced charting, filtering and paneling. The application integrates a number of external open source graphics libraries for advanced visualizations, including the ability to analyze ‘trajectories’ of life events and services. The system is designed to empower frontline teams to make timely decisions that increase the safety, permanency and well being of the children they serve.

How fast is lightening fast?

February 15, 2011

A huge congratulations to our partners at Ingres, who today announced that their lightening fast database VectorWise has set a new record for the Transaction Processing Performance Council’s TPC-H benchmark at scale factor 100. Not only did Vectorwise set a new standard, but it blew the previous record holder out of the water, delivering 340% of the previous record.

Equally outstanding about this news is the fact that VectorWise has not only changed the game in terms of performance, but the database also comes in at a fraction of the price of its competitors. Forward-thinking innovation, high performance, and low cost… sound familiar? It should.

What does this mean to Pentaho users?

Pentaho and Ingres established a partnership last October, with the goal to combine enterprise-class business intelligence with the speed and performance of the fastest analytical database on the market. With over 250,000 QphH (Queries per hour) for 100 GB of data, VectorWise is the epitome of agility at the database level. This means lightening fast query response times, more iterative cycles, and at essence, even more agile business intelligence.

Pentaho Global Partner Summit 2011 Recap

January 26, 2011

The energy was high and the sun was shining in San Francisco last week during the Pentaho Global Partner Summit 2011. Pentaho partners from nearly 20 countries around the world came together at the Presidio Golden Gate Club for two days of shared insights, innovation, and networking around open source business intelligence and data integration.

We could go on forever about highlights from the event’s action-packed two days, such as the Global Partner Award ceremony or the Lightening Round session where partners from Hong Kong, Quebec, Portugal, and more impressed us with their innovative implementations of Pentaho. However, we think it best to recount the highlights as shared by our friends and partners:

Thank you!

Thank you to all attendees, speakers, and participants, for playing a part in this year’s Global Partner Summit. It is our hope that you walked away with new ideas, opportunities, knowledge, and a sense of the spirit that continues to drive Pentaho to “Rise Above”. We hope that the experience was valuable to you and your organization, and look forward to seeing what you will accomplish in 2011.

La vie en Pentaho

December 15, 2010

As I write this blog I am on my way back home after a day in Paris where we participated in our first industry event in France last week.

Much of the past week has been French flavoured with the announcement of Pentaho in France, including several interviews with journalists, publications writing about and picking up on our announcement and last but  certainly not least, the launch of our brand-new website in French. It was about time that we truly had a local presence in France!

To emphasise our intentions, we participated in the Forum Decideo 2010, an annual event held in Paris which brings together BI experts, users, vendors for a series of case study presentations and expert sessions. We attended the event with our new French partner Valuetis, who also sponsored the event. It was a great experience to meet and speak with so many of our French friends.

Speaking of partners, we also held a webinar, Delivering low risk, low cost business intelligence solutions, last week with a new UK partner called Voodoo, who bring years of BI experience to bear and are fully focused on Pentaho. If you missed today’s webinar, feel free to view the replay here.

It’s really ‘La vie en Pentaho‘ these days and a great way to move through the last month of 2010.

Many of you are probably busy finishing up some activities before the holiday seasons, so I wish you all ‘bon courage’.

Cheers,

Q&A with Mari Jansdotter, Director of Embedded Sales

October 26, 2010

Q&A is a new series on the Business Intelligence from the Swamp Blog that interviews key members of the Pentaho team to learn more about their focus at Pentaho and outlook on the BI and DI industry. For our first post, we interviewed Mari Jansdotter, Director of Embedded Sales at Pentaho. Mari has been at Pentaho for almost two years and comes to us from SugarCRM. She is based in our San Francisco office and in her free time can can be found chasing around her two adorable kids.

1. How have you seen the OEM landscape change at Pentaho over the past year?

It is a whole new playing field!  We have seen really positive trends, the most notable being a high increase in inbound interest.  Larger organizations, who earlier might only have considered traditional, proprietary vendors for their enterprise-wide projects, are coming to Pentaho to improve upon their already mature product offerings.  Our open standards-based architecture allows them to easily integrate Pentaho into existing products.  Similarly, start-up and mid-market companies are choosing to build new products on Pentaho’s platform because our end-to-end functionality can scale with them as their product and customer needs evolve.  The inbound interest is really coming from all corners of the market.  The real shift is the fact that these companies are now looking at Pentaho not because of price, but because they are making a strategic decision to choose the right BI technology solution for their product and for their customers.

2. Is there a specific vertical or type of company that you see particularly rapid OEM adoption in?

There are certainly a handful of verticals that continually show interest in embedding Pentaho, such as telco, finance, retail, insurance, and healthcare, but to be completely honest we don’t have a vertical-focused market.  When I first started here, I was ready to work with purely ISVs, but I am constantly surprised by various types and sizes of companies developing their own software.  We have worked with everything from small media monitoring organizations to one of the largest POS companies in the world.

3. What are some of the reasons that you have seen companies choose Pentaho’s OEM Program over the competition?

I would say there are three main reasons that companies choose to partner with Pentaho. Number one is certainly product breadth, as the only truly integrated end-to-end open source BI suite.  Second would be ease of deployment, because what matters most to companies looking to OEM a product is how fast they can get their product to market and start seeing ROI.  Third is the modular way that our product has been built, from the ground up, has proven much faster and easier to deploy than any others on the market.

4. What, if any, benefits do you feel Pentaho’s open source model lends to OEM partners?

One of the huge benefits of the open source model is innovation.  Pentaho is adding new and exciting features faster than anyone else by taking advantage of our large worldwide community. I think our OEM partners also take comfort in the fact that they are able to go out and see what is under the covers of our product and architecture.  The open source nature of each module in the suite also means full transparency regarding where our product is today and where it is headed.  Our OEM partners are always dialed in to our product roadmap.  They know what is to come and when, so that they can plan ahead for their own products.

5. What benefits do OEM Partners receive from the Enterprise Edition, that are not found in the Community Edition?

Choosing the right product takes on a whole new dimension when you are going to be putting it into a product of your own.  The ability to simply pick up the phone and call our product experts directly, should anything go wrong, has saved our Enterprise Edition OEM partners countless amounts of time and money.  The Enterprise Edition is stable, certified and licensed software, based on the open source code but put  through rigorous in-house QA and testing.  Not only that, but for the majority of companies that will be embedding Pentaho as a visual front-end, the Enterprise Edition offers additional functionality that includes more user-friendly GUIs, which really adds to their product.

6. As we move into the last quarter of 2010, where would you like to see the future direction of Pentaho’s OEM program headed for 2011?

Something that will be very important to me in the immediate future is building a stronger internal community with our Enterprise Edition OEM partners.  I think there is a lot of value to be gained from encouraging partner to partner dialogue.  A first step in this direction has been the introduction of the OEM-focused Architect’s Bootcamp course, which has proven to be a great learning and networking opportunity.  We recently had a very successful summit for our EMEA Partners in Lisbon on September 23-24, and are planning another Global Partner Summit here in San Francisco on January 19-20.  In addition, we’ve held a series of OEM Power Lunches in New York, San Mateo and Houston tomorrow. It is my hope that initiatives like these will allow us to provide the best possible experience for our growing network of OEM partners around the world.
Do you have additional questions for Mari? Is there someone or a certain role at Pentaho you would like us to interview? Leave your questions in the comments section below. We’d love to hear from you.

A lot of listening

I am writing this blog as I fly home to Sweden from this year’s Pentaho EMEA Partner Summit in Lisbon, Portugal. This was a great opportunity to meet many of our partners from all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The event was an amazing success based off our partners’ feedback such as:

“It was beneficial to meet in-person with the Pentaho Channels and Management teams.”
“I found strong value in networking with other partners and learning about their accomplishments and best practices”
“Good presenters, good networking, good socializing, GREAT event!”

Personally, I found a lot of value in listening! As much as we presented over the two days, the team also did a lot of listening to our partners to better understand their challenges and opportunities. After their hearing stories, suggestions and ideas, I am very optimistic that we can now even better align with our partners’ needs to help drive more joint business and success.

One of the highlights of the Summit was presenting the 2010 EMEA Partner Awards. These awards recognise the organisations that have worked closely with Pentaho throughout the year to deliver outstanding customer success, commercial results or innovation in the region

Congratulations to the 2010 EMEA Partner Award Winners:

  • EMEA Partner of the Year – BNOVA in Italy was recognised for driving the most revenue for a partner in EMEA.
  • Best Market Development in EMEA – Millersoft in the UK was recognised for being the fastest to sell, market and grow after joining the Pentaho partner program.
  • Best Community Contributor EMEA – Aschauer in Austria was recognised for creating a SAP Java connector plugin for the data integration components of Pentaho Data Integration 4.0.
  • Channel Managers Pick EMEA – Xpand IT in Portugal was recognised as being Best in Class in terms of following the Partner Processes.
  • SI of the Year EMEA – Microgenesis in Spain was recognised for major wins at two global telecommunications providers.
  • Training Partner of the Year EMEA – Linalis in Switzerland & France was recognised for driving the most training revenue in EMEA.
  • OEM BI partner of the year – Conduct in Norway was recognised for their win at TV2, Norway’s largest commercial TV Channel.

Above are some photos from the event of our 2010 EMEA Partner Award winners. If you missed this great event and are interested in attending something similar in the future, we have recently announced the Global Partner Summit in San Francisco, November 9-10. After seeing and hearing the value the attendees took away from the EMEA Partner Summit, I highly recommend you check it out.

Cheers and have a successful end of September,
