Pentaho trip to Gatorland

May 18, 2011

Earlier this month, the sales and marketing teams gathered at the Pentaho Corporate Headquarters in Orlando, Florida for training, meetings and of course some fun.

Our surprise outing was to Gatorland. The night was a first time experience for all of us coming from around the world. From holding tarantulas, gator wrestling and gator feeding, we had a blast. Click here to check out photos from the event. It will give you a better explanation behind the title of this blog, BI from the Swamp!

This was also a great opportunity to bring the company together at the “West Campus,” the Miller Ale House for a company-wide happy hour. Click here for more photos from the event.

Sex
 &
Sizzle
–
not
 without
 plumbing

November 16, 2010

What sells BI software? Sex and Sizzle! What makes BI projects successful? All of the data work done before any grids or graphs are ever produced. It’s the side of the business most BI vendors don’t talk about as they’d rather just woo and wow people with flash charts and glossy dashboards. Not that there is anything wrong with that – who doesn’t like great looking output? But, if the backend plumbing is either too complicated or non-existent, then it doesn’t matter how sexy this stuff is.

Today Pentaho announced the Pentaho Enterprise Data Services Suite to help make the “plumbing” as easy and efficient as possible. We’ve enabled people to iteratively get from raw data–from virtually any source–all the way through to metadata and onto visualization in less than an hour. We’ve enabled a new set of users to accomplish this by taking away many of the complexities.

In about 80% of the use cases we encounter, our customers want to quickly create and perform analytics on the fly, do this in an iterative approach, and when satisfied put their projects into production. You shouldn’t need a Ph.D in Data Warehousing to accomplish this, nevertheless many tools require extensive knowledge of DW methodologies and practices. It is fine to demand this knowledge with larger Enterprise DWs (EDW) but why make everyone pay the price – both in terms of software cost and experience/training required.

Now it would be one thing to provide data integration with RDBMSs, another thing to integrate with ROLAP, and yet another to integrate with Big Data like Hadoop, but how nice would it be to have a single Data Integration and Business Intelligence platform to work for all of these? Almost as nice as the Florida Gators winning a national championship but we won’t have to worry about that in 2010…had to digress for a moment.

A big part of our product release today centers around Pentaho for Hadoop integration including the GA for Pentaho Data Integration and BI Suite for Hadoop. Big Data and the whole ”data explosion” trend is just starting, so if you aren’t there today, give it time and know that Pentaho is already positioned to help in these use cases.

Pentaho allows you to start down an easy path with Agile BI and then scale up to EDW when and if necessary with enterprise data services. Our engineering team and community have spent significant time and effort to bring these services to market, and today is the official release. Please take a few minutes to read up on the new Pentaho Enterprise Data Services Suite and attend the launch webcast. Or, go ahead and download the Pentaho Enterprise Data Services Suite and start making easier, faster, better decisions.

Pentaho summer intern rock stars

July 30, 2010

Internships are often associated with organizing papers and getting coffee. This is far from the truth for the Pentaho internship program. This summer we were fortunate to have three rock star interns. They were not fetching coffee however, enjoying our stocked break room with everything from snacks to beer. This summer they got a taste of what it is like to work in our San Francisco sales and marketing office. They were able to  work alongside experienced leaders in sales and marketing learning about CRM and marketing automation software, sales lead qualification, outbound lead generation, social media and business operations.

Pentaho is unique in that it adapts to the backgrounds and strengths of the interns and allows them to select what they will focus on in the summer program. We just wanted to take this opportunity to thank them for their hard work this summer and highlight some of the great things they’ve learned this summer:

Summer 2010 Intern Rock Stars:

Rick Daley: Rick is going into his junior year at the University of Florida.  He has been playing soccer for 18 years, and is currently playing with the UF men’s club team.  Rick is taking part in the internship to understand the business intelligence market and to determine if he will follow in the footsteps of his father.  Rick is using the summer to make a final decision on what major he will pursue.  Pentaho has allowed Rick to realize sales is much more creative and interesting that he previously thought.

Mark Daley: In the Fall, Mark will start his Senior year at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, FL.  Mark is the youngest employee to work for Pentaho and has utilized his talents to help the look and feel of Pentaho’s social media presence.   Mark thinks it is a great opportunity to get real world experience while he is still young and beautiful.  “Working under Rich Taylor, Pentaho Sales Operations Manager, has shown me a lot of things; first and foremost, he taught me that frozen Twix and Dr. Pepper go together; and more importantly that work can be both fun and rewarding.”

Paul Lyandres: Paul is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is active in a variety of community, civic, and professional organizations.  Paul is a talented young leader with a passion for learning.  Paul’s fascination with technology and his desire to work in a start-up environment brought him to Pentaho. At Pentaho, Paul applies his drive for excellence and high performance to support the sales and marketing team across a variety of roles. Prior to joining Pentaho, Paul worked for LIIF, a non-profit finance fund, and spent over 4-years at Martin Wolf Associates, a leading IT investment bank. His interests include fitness, cooking, swimming, and reading.

With the rapid growth of Pentaho, our interns have made immediate and valuable contributions.  Their fresh ideas and hard work were a huge help to us this summer and we’ll miss them around the San Francisco office.

What do Tim Tebow and Pentaho have in common?

April 23, 2010

Tim Tebow was selected in First Round of NFL Draft!

Why is this great? And why am I blogging about this?

  1. He is a University of Florida/Gator Graduate – and so am I
  2. He helped us win 2 NCAA National Championships in Football
  3. He won 1 Heisman and was nominated for two more
  4. Biggest reasons why this is great:
    • He was ridiculed by all of the NFL scouts as not being a “NFL product”
    • All of the major NFL “Analyst” predicted he would be picked in the 3rd round
    • All of the major NFL “Analyst” said “he didn’t have it”

It sounds just like what Pentaho went thru in 2007-2009 with analysts, mega-vendor competitors, pundits, etc. – “we wouldn’t be anything” , “we couldn’t stand up to the big guys”, “we wouldn’t be around in a few years”, etc.  Well, what are the analysts’ saying now? – “OSBI is Here to Stay”, “OSBI will Grow by 500% by 2012”, “OSBI is a 80% Better TCO”, “Pentaho Leads The Way in OSBI”, etc. What are the mega-vendors doing now? Giving away free reporting in a desperate attempt to compete with us, providing their sales teams with competitive ppts vs Pentaho, losing in bake-offs against us, upsetting their customer base by rising maintenance prices, buying “Pentaho” Google adwords – oh, how times have changed!

So, just like Tebow did in football, Pentaho continues proving its leadership position in the BI market.

Go Gators,

Richard
