This week we will launch Pentaho BI 4 Enterprise Edition. This major product launch has exciting new and improved enhancements for casual business users, business analysts and developers/administrators. We can’t give too many details away today but we encourage you to register now for the live demo on June 23. Be the first to learn about these exciting new features (hint: reporting, data discovery, UI, self-service).
It is always good to get out and meet old friends and new, when the sales calendar permits. A great way to combine meeting the public and keeping up Pentaho’s increasing momentum in the EMEA region is attending events. This month has seen seven so far; the launch of our EMEA HQ in Sweden, the Ovum Business Intelligence summit in London, our sponsorship of the Hadoop User Group, also in London, as well as dates for the Pentaho Agile BI Tour, which is ongoing for another few months
First and foremost was the launch of our EMEA HQ in a city which has seen its fair share of Open Source innovation – Stockholm. Held in the famous 100 year old Dramaten theatre and co-hosted by Pentaho partner Omicron, an invited audience of around 50 heard from Lars Nordwall, our Swedish-born Senior Vice-President of Sales (pictured left), as well as partners Conduct and BizIntel. A great success in terms of networking, we will follow up with another event towards the end of the year also at the Dramaten, so feel free to let me know if you can make it. You can see all the photos from this event on the Pentaho Facebook Page.
Next up was the high-end Ovum Business Intelligence Symposium, a CIO-level event, which we co-sponsored with our partner Millersoft and saw us introduce a very impressive presentation from Pentaho customer Air Menzies, whose business involves shipping air freight underneath the passengers on scheduled flights. The audience were spellbound with tales of gold-plated Bugatti Veyronnes being transported from the Gulf to London for a summer with their owners and perhaps even more by an excellent iPad demo of Pentaho from satisfied customer Angus Gow (look out for the impressive case study soon).
Finally in a busy few weeks, Pentaho contributed the beer, pizza and (some of the) brainpower to only the fifth UK Hadoop User Group. Pentaho’s philosophy, which fosters communities like this, proves the importance of the Community aspect of our Open Source commitment. In this communal atmosphere, it was pleasing to hear so many searching questions from a friendly gathering that included some forward-thinking Pentaho customers. If you deal with Big Data but could not make it along, the chances are our paths will cross soon.

A recent trend we have noticed at Pentaho is that an increasing number of customers reaching out to us for their BI solution are using spreadmarts as the default reporting tool and rely heavily on Excel/spreadmarts for storing and gaining insight on their data. Red Flag! Often overlooked are the many risks that these spreadmarts introduce to your decision making process. While effective for displaying static data, Excel/spreadmarts are a poor substitute for modern business intelligence.
Last month, Pentaho hosted a webcast to answer the popular question, “How do you save money and time by replacing Excel/Spreadmarts?” The speakers featured experts Rick Sherman, co-author of the TDWI study, “Strategies for Managing Spreadmarts and Migrating to a Managed BI Environment” and Jake Cornelius, Director, Product Management at Pentaho. The attendance and response to the webcast was tremendous. If you missed this webcast, no worries, it is now on-demand to watch on your schedule. Here’s an inside look at some of the highlights:
- You are not alone! The median company has 30 Spreadmarts. Average = 837!
- The average costs of spreadmarts to an organization is $780,000 a year.
- The benefits of allowing business users to use spreadmarts are that they already understand the tool and can do it without IT assistance.
- The dangers associated with spreadmarts include lack of data consistency, audit trail and data governance as well as the productivity drain due to version control and inaccurate data – see screen shot below. (In this webcast learn how to mitigate this risk and successful strategies for reducing you companies dependency)
- There is a solution, which allows you to see the difference a managed BI solution will make. In 3 days you can receive an initial proof of value using a set of your own data (check out the Pentaho 72 Hour Challenge).
These are just a few of the highlights from the webcast. To learn more about how to save money and better leverage your data to make smarter decisions watch the on-demand webcast, ‘Modern Cost-Effective BI Will Save your Firm Money and Time by Replacing Spreadmarts.”

Orlando is my home, but I always enjoy my trips to the Bay Area. For the past two weeks, I have been non-stop in San Francisco with our board meeting, partner and customer meetings, multiple conferences and meetings with our growing west coast team. With so much going on, I wanted to share with you quick recap.
Home base for the trip was the Pentaho office located in the Financial District near the Ferry Building. It was great being able to spend time with our rapidly growing sales team led by the SVP of WW Sales, Lars Nordwall. They mixed the trip with a lot of business with back-to-back customer and partner meetings and a little pleasure with a happy hour one of the nights. Below are some photos with a few members of the team:
Last week Pentaho had a presence at three conferences. The first was the MySQL Conference where were a sponsor. I presented on the topic, Agile BI – Collapsing BI from Months to Minutes . Our booth was very busy with quality conversations and people who were excited about our Agile BI initiative. Next was the SugarCon Conference on Wednesday where I presented, ‘The Information Rain Dance: Business Information in the Cloud.’ We also had a presence at the Gartner BI Summit in Las Vegas.
Listening the community over the past two weeks, I wanted to highlight some of the chatter.
Here are my favorite Tweets (April 11-16):
There is also a great discussion in the works on the Open Source BI Group on LinkedIn about Pentaho vs. Jaspersoft. We encourage you to speak up!
I look forward to a busy week back home in Orlando.
